Repo Men an aggressively ridiculous thriller

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirnVq5NOpEAbEFLV165ztVvBpwhLdwY0xe8JXiu79jWFX1xMn638dJDndpjKsQ4mJBWWLfYkTFOoMehNUh8uLgfHw-Rx11OjJTNoAuegZNYb28MzUL3pqkjtxMnRLpVZR5aQy0pU0b0Rw/s400/Repo+Men.jpg

The future looks awfully predictable (underscore "awfully") in ‘Repo Men,’ a blood-soaked, derivative and increasingly ridiculous sci-fi thriller in which Jude Law and Forest Whitaker play a pair of hotshot repossession agents who forcefully remove artificial organs from those who fall behind on their payments.
Comprising reclaimed bits from ‘Blade Runner,’ ‘A Clockwork Orange’ and ‘Children of Men’ and glibly served up with hyper Guy Ritchie attitude by first-time feature director Miguel Sapochnik, the resulting in-your-face mess never knows what it wants to be when it grows up.

Those identity issues are destined to take their toll when it comes to tracking down an audience after the Universal picture opens Friday.

When you think clinically violent, muscular, futuristic action vehicles, the nominally thoughtful likes of Law, Whitaker and Liev Schreiber don`t readily spring to mind, and that should pose a problem where a targeted young-male demo is concerned.

Based on the cautionary tale ‘Repossession Mambo’ by Eric Garcia (‘Matchstick Men’) and set in a near future where society`s quest for eternal youth has come with a price, ‘Repo Men’ revolves around the daily activities of Law`s Remy and Forest`s Jake on behalf of their employer, an unscrupulous medical technology firm known as the Union.

Their job description requires them to track down those in serious arrears and methodically extract those various, leased-to-own synthetic body parts and report back to the head office and their callous, soft-spoken boss (Schreiber).

But when an ill-fated repo assignment results in Remy being outfitted with a top-of-the-line Jarvik ticker, he undergoes a, uh, change of heart, and, falling behind in his own payments, finds himself being chased down by his former partner.

The film`s smug twists and turns might have been more entertaining if one hadn`t been able to see any of them coming, but the script, penned by Garcia and Garrett Lerner (‘House M.D.’), and especially Sapochnik`s unsubtle direction signal everything a century in advance.

Meanwhile, in front of the cameras, though Law seems to be having fun transformed into a mean, buff fighting machine, one just can`t buy him as a kick-ass, Jason Statham-style tough guy when the contrived plotting demands it.

Although Whitaker and Schreiber are only slightly less unconvincing, others, including Brazil`s Alice Braga (‘City of God’) and the Netherlands` Carice van Houten (‘Black Book’), appear uncomfortable in their English-speaking roles.

Shot extensively in Toronto, the film gets decent futuristic value for its production-design buck, courtesy of David Sandefur (‘Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D’) and visual effects supervisor Aaron Weintraub (‘Remember Me’).

Robert Pattinson has confessed he would love to spread his vampire wings and pounce on playing James Bond if given a chance.
The Twilight actor, who plays Edward Cullen in the hit series, said he "would love to" portray 007 in the future.

But the 23-year-old was less convinced about his fitness levels to pull off the popular secret agent character, Sky News reported.

Speaking at the UK premiere of his new film, Remember Me, the star joked he was "not very good at running".

Pattinson said of his new movie: "It does worry me that when a film has a lot of attention, most audiences are so used to having all their buttons pressed, and it doesn``t really press the same buttons as normal films.

"I hope people don’t go into it thinking, ``I am going to watch a really happy romantic drama,`` because it is not really."

Titanic success made me want to stop acting: DiCaprio

Hollywood superstar Leonardo DiCaprio has revealed the huge success of his 1997 starrer `Titanic` made him feel devastated so much so he wanted to stop acting.

`At first I hated the way I was turned into a pretty boy, as if that was all that was expected of me. It made me almost want to stop acting for a while because the attention that was focused on me was not where I wanted to take my career,` he said, reports mirror.co.uk.

`I didn`t want to do romantic films or anything which just exploited my image or appearance. I also kind of had to be more careful about the friends I was hanging out with. I was living a pretty big life for a while and then that just gets tiresome,` he added.

The actor lives a more quiet life now.

`You get all the partying out of your system, so I live much more quietly these days. I haven`t done the nightclub scene in a long, long time. It`s boring, to tell you the truth,` he said.

It’s been two decades since her very first hit, but Aussie pop princess Kylie Minogue is still raking in records amount of cash.

The 41-year-old star amassed 4.1 million pounds in the year to April 2009, it has emerged.

The latest accounts for the singer’s Darenote company lodged at Companies House in Britain reveals she earned 2.8 million pounds from her 2008-09 world tour, reports the Mail.

The rest was made through record sales and royalties.

Minogue paid herself 1.2 million pounds and left the rest of the money in Darenote.

"They are very healthy figures for any business," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted a financial expert as saying.

The expert added: "But for a singer who has been around for quite a long time it is incredible to be still earning money at this level.

"There are few pop stars who can sustain themselves at the top for so long.

"This shows that Kylie Minogue is among that select band."

Financially, it is Minogue’s most successful year throughout her career.

London: `Umbrella` singer Rihanna has confirmed that she will be recording a single with British boyband JLS (Jack the Lad Swing) before the end of the year.
Rihanna, 22, was teamed up with JLS by Jay-Z, who is keen to develop the boyband in America.

He further plans on putting the two acts together and to link JLS up with his wife Beyonce and pal Kanye.

"Working with JLS is something that will happen this year," the Sun quoted Rihanna as saying.

"Jay will make stars out of them. He has been a great mentor to me.

"He has been around long enough to spot real talent and he knows who will become worldwide stars.

"They can sing, they can dance, they look good, actually they look very good.

"But more importantly they look like a group. It doesn`t look like they have been put together. It looks like they are meant to be together," she stated.

Rihanna, who has met the boys at parties in London, is certainly very enthusiastic, and believes they could become the biggest band on the planet.

"I will be working with them on one of their singles and am sure Kanye and Bey will collaborate with them on tracks as well," she said.

"America has only had a little taste of them so far, but give it probably as little as 18 months and they could be the most famous band in the world.

"There is nothing Jay doesn`t know about the music business.

"Under his management I think JLS will probably be the biggest," she added.

Release of `Wall Street` sequel delayed

The release date of director Oliver Stone`s "Wall Street: Money Never Sleep", which is a sequel to the film released in 1987, has been pushed back from April to September.

The film, which was scheduled for an April 23 release in the US, is now expected to hit screens Sep 24, reports independent.co.uk.

The original starring Michael Douglas and Charlie Sheen was about an impatient stockbroker (Sheen) ready to do anything to be at the top.

The sequel titled "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps", which is hitting screens after 23 years, will show Douglas`s character Gordon Gekko attempting to warn Wall Street about the collapse of the financial system.

Producer and Douglas feel the timing of the movie was good because of the recent economic crisis.

"There was a recession when the first movie arrived in 1987. There`s a recession now," femalefirst.com quoted Douglas as saying.

The sequel also stars Carey Mulligan, Shia LaBeouf and Charlie Sheen.
